Europeans in East Africa website launched

A database which holds information on people of European origin who lived and worked in East Africa from about 1880 to 1939 has been launched online.

It concentrates mainly on Kenya, but there are a some entries for Uganda and Tanzania .

It was compiled by Peter Ayre, who worked on it from 1993 until his death in 2018.  Christine Nicholls, an EAWL member, then took over work on the database, editing it and adding new information.

The database can be found at the following webpage: http://www.europeansineastafrica.co.uk

Delicious Northern Lunch

The Northern Branch held its lunch on Sunday 6th October at the Tempest Arms, Elslack, Nr Skipton, organised by Jenni Mayer. Of the 15 attendees 6 were at Jenni’s inaugural lunch 25 years ago.

An excellent curry and lots of reminiscing of life in East Africa was enjoyed by all.

A busy Hampshire Lunch

The Hampshire lunch was held on the 5th October in our usual venue, the Village Hall at Burley in the New Forest.  Over forty people attended, from far and wide, and enjoyed a curry lunch, cheesecake desert and tea\coffee and biscuits to finish.  We had three hours to chat to friends rarely met with these days, going back to our school years.  The weather was kind, and the volume of chat was high.  In addition to the meal there was a small donation bar, a bring-and-buy table, a raffle, and a book table.  Grateful thanks to the many volunteers for their hard work and all who made it possible.

Summer Lunch 2019

Our Summer Lunch was held at the Refectory, Guildford Cathedral, on 28th July. Forty-nine members and guests attended from far and wide, and enjoyed a delicious buffet curry lunch with all the trimmings. It was a most convivial event, relaxed and friendly. Books, Africana and a wonderful selection of African made bags and baskets were available to buy and there were lots of raffle prizes.

Excellent Curry at Norfolk Lunch

The small select group who attended the Norfolk Lunch this year enjoyed an excellent curry and good company on 7th July.

A successful Devon Lunch

24 EAWL members and friends of East Africa gathered at “Salama”, the Tiverton, Devon, home of Gordon & Anne Davies, in warm & sunny “Kenya weather” on the last Saturday in June – the 10th annual meeting held at this venue. We especially welcomed our President, Annie Appleyard, Ann Narraway (Hon. Secretary Benevolent Committee), Morag Owen-Burke (Leader of Dorset/Somerset Group), and our own Branch Chairman, Christine Marsh. Whilst some of our faithful long-standing members were, happily, still with us, we were also pleased to greet a good number of younger and more recent friends. Happy memories were revived, old friendships renewed, aided by considerable quantities of good Kenya curry, fruit salad and Kenya coffee!

Northern Group Lunch date change

Please note that the Northern Group lunch will now be on Sunday 6th October 2019.

AGM 2019

Our AGM was held on 12th March 2019 in the Alamein Room at the Victory Services Club at Marble Arch. It was attended by 63 members and their guests, who enjoyed an excellent curry lunch.

Edward Paice, an EAWL member and Director of the Africa Research Institute, gave a very interesting talk entitled Musing on East Africa through 10 Objects. His objects led us through his memories of life and authorship over the last 20 years.

Members and their guests had plenty of opportunity to catch up with friends old and new, as can be seen in the gallery of photographs below.
